The history of Djarum little cigars originated in the late 19th century in the Indonesian city of Kudus, Central Java. Over the course of a hundred years, the manufacture of Djarum little cigars has transformed from a handicraft production into the largest industrial sector, making a huge contribution to the country’s economy, second only in importance to oil and gas production.
What makes Djarum little cigars so special today, distinguishing it from other cigars? First of all, it is the traditional taste and aroma of cloves and the pleasant crackle of each cigarette, which sounds like “kretek-kretek”, which formed the basis of the name of the tobacco product.
The production of Djarum little cigars is much more complicated than the production of conventional cigarettes, since, along with tobacco, there are 2 other components used: cloves and sauce. It should also be noted that Indonesian tobacco is one of the most valuable in the world in terms of quality and variety.
With more than half a century of history behind it, today the Djarum company has a solid weight and is a recognizable brand. They owe this success to their products – unique cigarettes with cloves, which are widely known throughout the world.
The first Djarum workshop was established on April 21, 1951 in the city of Kudus in central Java by the founder of Oei Wie Gwan. Just 9 months earlier, he had acquired a license to make kreteks. Later, on the basis of this production, one of the most efficient industrial sectors in Indonesia was built. Historically, Kudus is the birthplace and cradle of the Djarum little cigars. Over the years, the small handicraft industry Djarum has grown into a world famous brand.
Since the 70s of the twentieth century, the global export of Djarum tobacco products has grown rapidly, thanks to the uniqueness and recognition of the product.
